What is Website Screenshot Generator?
Website Screenshot Generator is a free online tool that captures a screenshot of any website URL and returns it as a PNG image. You enter a URL, optionally choose a viewport size (desktop, tablet, mobile, or custom), and click Capture. The tool fetches the page using a headless browser, renders it, and captures the screenshot. The result is displayed on the page and can be downloaded. Screenshots are useful for documentation, design review, archiving, competitor analysis, and social sharing. The tool supports multiple viewport presets: desktop (1920x1080), tablet (768x1024), mobile (375x812), and custom dimensions. A full-page option captures the entire scrollable page instead of just the viewport. The tool requires a screenshot service (Puppeteer-based) to be running; it calls an API that performs the actual capture. The tool is free and does not require an account.
Web designers, developers, and marketers use website screenshots for many purposes. Documenting a design before and after changes, creating mockups for presentations, archiving how a site looked at a point in time, or sharing a page preview on social media are common use cases. Manually taking screenshots requires opening the URL, resizing the browser, and capturing. The tool automates this. Enter the URL, select the viewport, and get a PNG. A Sample button uses google.com as an example. The result appears in a card with a download link. The tool stores the screenshot temporarily; you download it to keep a copy. If the screenshot service is not running, the tool shows an error asking you to ensure the service is available.
Who Benefits from This Tool
Web designers and UX professionals benefit when documenting designs or creating style guides. You can capture how a site looks at different breakpoints (desktop, tablet, mobile) without manually resizing the browser. The viewport presets match common device sizes. Screenshots can be used in design presentations or client deliverables.
Developers and QA engineers benefit when testing responsive layouts. Capture a page at mobile, tablet, and desktop sizes to verify the design. Screenshots can be attached to bug reports or shared with the team. The full-page option captures long pages that require scrolling.
Marketers and SEO professionals benefit when analyzing competitors or archiving campaign landing pages. A screenshot preserves how a page looked at a specific time. Use it for competitive analysis, before-and-after comparisons, or social media previews. The tool is fast for single-URL captures.
Key Features
Viewport Presets
Choose desktop (1920x1080), tablet (768x1024), mobile (375x812), or custom (enter width and height). The preset determines the browser viewport size for the capture. Different viewports show how the site responds to screen size. Custom allows any dimensions.
Full-Page Capture
When enabled, the tool captures the entire scrollable page instead of just the visible viewport. Useful for long pages, landing pages, or documentation. When disabled, only the visible area is captured. Note: full-page support depends on the screenshot service implementation.
Sample and Reset
The Sample button uses https://www.google.com/ as the URL and runs the capture. This demonstrates the tool when the screenshot service is available. The Reset button clears the URL and result. Both help new users.
Download Result
After a successful capture, the screenshot is displayed and a download link is provided. The image is stored on the server temporarily. Download it to save a permanent copy. The format is PNG.
How to Use
- Enter the URL. Type or paste the full URL of the page to capture (e.g., https://example.com). Include https:// or http://.
- Select viewport. Choose desktop, tablet, mobile, or custom. For custom, enter width and height.
- Enable full-page if needed. Check the full-page option to capture the entire scrollable page.
- Click Capture. The tool sends the request to the screenshot service. When complete, the image appears. Download it to save.
Common Use Cases
- Capturing a website for design documentation or style guides
- Testing responsive layouts at different viewport sizes
- Archiving how a page looked at a specific time
- Creating social media preview images
- Competitor analysis and design inspiration
- Bug reports with visual evidence
- Before-and-after comparisons for redesigns
Tips & Best Practices
Use the full URL including the protocol. Some sites redirect http to https; use https when possible. Ensure the URL is publicly accessible. Pages behind login, with aggressive bot blocking, or with CAPTCHAs may not capture correctly. For localhost or internal URLs, the screenshot service must be able to reach them.
Choose the right viewport for your use case. Desktop is default for general captures. Mobile is useful for responsive testing. Tablet fills the gap. Custom dimensions let you match specific devices or design specs. Full-page captures can be large for very long pages; consider viewport-only for quick previews.
Limitations & Notes
The tool requires a screenshot service (e.g., Puppeteer-based server) to be running. The service is configured via SCREENSHOT_API_URL in the environment. If the service is not available, the tool shows an error. The tool does not execute JavaScript-heavy interactions; it captures the initial render. Some sites may not render fully without user interaction. The tool does not store screenshots permanently; download them to keep copies. The tool is free and does not require an account. Complete the captcha if required.
